Rustlers Women's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - January 17 & 18, 2020
The Lakeland College women's volleyball team finished their home weekend double-header with two wins over the Keyano College Huskies in Lloydminster.
On Friday night, the Rustlers defeated the Huskies 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23). The Rustlers had a strong start and controlled the game early. They would win the first set handily, 25-16 over the Huskies.
In the second set, the Rustlers would carry their momentum over and take an early lead. The Huskies would play some impressive defense and were incredibly aggressive from the service line, causing some distress on the Rustlers' side. The Huskies would win the second set over the Rustlers 25-22.
The Rustlers would regain their composure and find their groove in the third set to win it 25-18. With the game on the line, the Huskies would fight to take an early lead in the fourth set going up 6-1. The Rustlers would slowly work their way back into the game and eventually overcome the Huskies right at the end, winning the fourth set 25-23, and the match 3-1.
The Rustlers were led by first-year outside hitter Jenay Varga with 14 kills, 3 service aces, 14 digs, and a 46% kill efficiency. She was named player of the game for her impressive performance.
Other standout performances from the Rustlers include: first-year outside hitter Madison Blain with 9 kills, 2 blocs, 1 service ace and 12 digs, and; fourth-year right side Bailee Weiler with 8 kills, 1 block, 1 service ace and 4 digs.
On Saturday afternoon, the Rustlers would once again defeat the Huskies in 4 sets (25-27, 25-12, 25-22, 25-9).
The Huskies took their turn of having the strong start, by winning the first set in extra points 27-25 over the Rustlers. Strong serving from the Huskies caused a bit of chaos on the Rustlers' side.
In the second set, the Rustlers were much calmer and more composed, and won the set handily, 25-12. The Huskies would fight to keep the third set close, but ultimately the Rustlers would win 25-22.
In the fourth set, the Rustlers ran away with the game, showing no mercy in winning the fourth set 25-9 and the match 3-1.
Once again, the Rustlers were led by Varga who had a team high 17 kills, paired with a 67% kill efficiency, 1 service aces and 7 digs. Statistically, Varga led the team in every category, except blocks. Fourth year middle blocker Brooklyn Boehm led the team in blocks with 3 and had a 57% kill efficiency. Weiler added 7 kills, 4 service aces and 3 digs for the Rustlers.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was Madison Blain with 6 kills, 1 block, 2 service aces, and 6 digs.
The Rustlers are currently on a 12-game win streak and sitting at a record of 13-3 and 2nd in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division.
The Rustlers will be taking on the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks this coming weekend on Friday, January 24 at 6 pm in the Lakeland College Gymnasium.
