Rustlers Women's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - Nov 22 & 23, 2019
The Rustlers women's volleyball had a clean sweep of the Concordia Thunder over the weekend, not dropping a set.
On Friday night on homecourt the Rustlers had a dominant performance defeating the Thunder in 3 straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-17).
The Rustlers showed consistency and steadiness on the court throughout the whole match. Every time the Thunder gave a little push, the Rustlers would counter it, consistently staying ahead for most of the match.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was fourth-year middle blocker Brooklyn Boehm with 11 kills, 3 blocks 1 service ace and 1 dig. Boehm also had a 50% kill efficiency.
First-year outside Madison Blain had 9 kills and 7 digs in the match. First year setter Jana Laing had 2 kills, 1 bock, 7 digs and 35 assists in the match.
Saturday night would end in similar fashion to Friday night with the Rustlers defeating the Thunder in 3 sets once again (26-24, 25-23, 25-19).
However, the scores in each of the sets on Saturday night were much closer than they were on Friday night. This was in part due to the Thunder being more comfortable on their homecourt and applying more pressure and velocity from the service line.
In the opening set, the Rustlers struggled to control the ball resulting in a set going into extra points. The Rustlers would ultimately come out on top winning the set 26-24.
In the second set, the Rustlers continued to struggle with their ball control and would go down early in the game 12-4. Some clutch serving by fourth-year Olivia Thomson in the middle of the set allowed for the Rustlers to get back in the game and ultimately win the second set.
With two set victories under their belt the Rustlers appeared to be much more comfortable on the floor and controlled the pace of the third set.
The Rustlers were led by first-year outside hitter Jenay Varga with 17 kills, 1 ace and 14 digs. Defensively the Rustlers were led by fourth-year right side Bailee Weiler with a team-high 20 digs. Fourth-year libero Belle deVries added 17 digs to the Rustlers defense as well.
The Rustlers are headed into their final weekend of the semester with a record of 7-3. They will host the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves in a double-header weekend series at home. Game times are 6 pm on Friday, November 29 and 1 pm on Saturday, November 30.
