Rustlers Women's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - Oct 18 & 19, 2019
The Rustlers women's volleyball team have opened their season with a pair of losses to The King's University Eagles.
The team hosted the Eagles at their Friday night home opener in Lloydminster. The first Rustlers vs. Eagles showing did not disappoint, with the game going to 5 sets (19-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-16, 6-15).
The teams were evenly matched and consistently went back and forth trading point for point. The Eagles are the defending Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) Champions and finished just ahead of the Rustlers atop of the North Division last season. Needless to say, they have both been top contenders in the league in recent years.
The Rustlers came out perhaps a little nervous in the first set but settled into the game by the second set. The Rustlers blew the Eagles out in the fourth set, with the game on the line, forcing a fifth set.
In the fifth set the Rustlers simply didn't have it, suffering several mistakes on serve receive and struggling to put the ball away on attack.
The Rustlers were led by fourth year outside hitter, Belle de Vries, with 14 kills, 2 service aces and 11 digs. Fourth year Brooklyn Boehm added 9 kills of her own and 3 stuff blocks.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was Belle de Vries.
The Rustlers looked to bounce back in Saturday's match in Edmonton where they would face the Eagles a second time. The Rustlers came out flat and couldn't seem to be able to contain the Eagles who were much more comfortable in their home gym.
The Rustlers would lose the match in 3 sets (17-25, 18-25, 20-25). Outside hitters Belle de Vries and Jenay Varga had 7 kills each and middle blocker Brooklyn Boehm had 5.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was fourth-year right side/setter Bailee Weiler, who had 9 kills, 1 ace and 5 digs in the match.
The Rustlers are heading into a bye weekend and will be back in action at home on Saturday, November 2nd at 6pm against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks.
