WVB Weekend Recap | November 9 & 10, 2018
The Lakeland Rustlers Women's Volleyball team improved to 8-0 over the weekend, after defeating the Keyano Huskies in both matches in Lloydminster.
Friday night, looked like it was going to be a battle, as the Huskies challenged the Rustlers in the first set. It was the Rustlers who would come out on top, taking the first set 25-23. The Rustlers took control of the match after the first set and won the second and third sets convincingly, 25-15 and 25-14.
The Rustlers were led by third year setter Bailee Weiler with 11 kills, three blocks and a service ace, earning her Player of the Game honors. Fifth year outside hitter Ahnika Kuse had another strong match for the Rustlers, finishing with ten kills, five digs, and a service ace. Fifth year setter Rae Sigurdson continued to run the offense for the Rustlers, finishing the match with 38 assists and added eight digs and three service aces.
In the Saturday afternoon rematch, the Huskies once again came out challenging the Rustlers in the first set. It was a hard fought, back and forth set that the Huskies won, 25-23. The Rustlers came back and dominated in the second set, defeating the Huskies 25-11. The Huskies were resilient in the third and fourth sets, pushing the Rustlers, but the Rustlers proved to be the more talented and experienced team, winning 25-23 and 25-21.
Kuse led the way for the Rustlers with 14 kills, seven digs, and five service aces, while 5th-year outside hitter Shelby Becker added 12 kills, ten digs, and two blocks. Player of the Game for the Rustlers was Sigurdson, with 42 assists, five digs, one kill, and one service ace.
The Rustlers now sit atop the ACAC North Division with an 8-0 match record and 24-2 set record.
With four games remaining in the first semester, the Rustlers face two of the top teams in the North Division in the Kings Eagles (8-0) and Augustana Vikings (7-3).
The Rustlers will travel to Edmonton on Friday, November 16th to take on the Kings Eagles, with the rematch being Saturday, November 17th at 6 pm in Lloydminster.
The Rustlers will then finish the first semester with two more games at home, taking on the Augustana Vikings on Friday, November 23rd and Saturday, November 24th, with both matches getting underway at 6 pm.
