WVB Weekend Recap | October 12 & 13, 2018
One of the most successful CCAA women's volleyball teams in the past few years, the Lakeland Rustlers regular season began this past weekend. The Rustlers hit the road and traveled to Grande Prairie to take on the Wolves.
There was lots of excitement Friday night, as it was the first game of the regular season for both teams. The Rustlers proved to be the stronger team, defeating the Wolves in 3 sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-18). The Rustlers returned many key pieces from their 2017-2018 ACAC Gold Medalist and CCAA Bronze Medalist team. Fifth year outside hitters Annika Kuse and Shelby Becker led the team with nine kills, ten digs and 8 kills nine digs respectively.
Rustlers fifth year setter Rae Sigurdson took control of the offense and finished the match with 14 assists, earning her Player of the Game.
Saturday was a battle, with both teams competing hard for the win. The first set was filled with action and lots of scoring, as the Rustlers took the set 34-32. The Rustlers used their experience to win another close set in the second, winning 25-22. The third set went to the Wolves, 25-20. The teams went back and forth early on in the fourth set before the Rustlers took control, winning 25-18. The Rustlers were once again led by Kuse with 12 kills and Becker with 11 kills and 13 digs. Third year libero Olivia Thomson had 15 digs while Sigurdson finished the match with 29 assists.
Player of the Game for the Rustlers was third year setter Bailee Weiler, who had ten kills and six digs.
The Rustlers return to the court Friday night in their home opener as they take on the NAIT Ooks at 6 pm. The Rustlers then head to Edmonton Saturday for the rematch.
