Rustlers Women's Soccer | Weekend Recap - Oct 19 & 20, 2019
The Rustlers women's soccer team ended their regular season this weekend with a road trip to Fort McMurray to face the Keyano Huskies. The Rustlers fell just short of the Huskies in both games 0-2 and 1-2.
Saturday's game was a tough one for the Rustlers in which they only managed 4 shots on goal offensively. However, defensively they played a tremendous game, only allowing 2 goals, 1 in the first half, and 1 in the second half.
Rustlers goalkeeper Nicole Prium had 16 saves in the game. Player of the game for the Rustlers was first year striker, Kimberlea Pfiel.
In Sunday's game the Rustlers had a better showing against the Huskies, losing 2-1. The Huskies scored their first goal midway through the first half. At half time, the score remained 1-0 in favour of the Huskies.
Pfiel would score the lone goal for the Rustlers in the 65th minute to tie the game at 1 a piece. Late in the second half, the Huskies would score again, putting them ahead of the Rustlers 2-1. Player of the game for the Rustlers was Nicole Prium.
This weekend's road trip concluded the women's soccer team's ACAC season.
Head coach Laith Matlak said "the girls battled hard, unfortunately, we did not get the results, but we played good soccer." He also added, "I am proud of how far we have come and how much the team has developed as individuals and as a group."
With the Rustlers heading into off-season and the beginning of the approaching futsal season, Matlak said that he has a lot of work planned to prepare the team for next year, and added, "I am excited to see this group on the field next year!"
