Rustlers Basketball Battles the Wolves
The Rustler basketball teams boarded the bus and made the long trip to Grande Prairie to battle the Wolves over the weekend.
The Rustler women came out hard and fast building a 44 point lead at the half and went on to a 106 – 49 victory. Six members of the team finished the game in double figures scoring for the Rustlers. Leena Garda had a great game for Lakeland with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Anika Timmerman had a great defensive game leading all Rustlers defensively with 9 rebounds.
Saturday afternoon the Rustlers were looking to add another win to their league-leading 9 and 0 record. The Wolves started the game battling hard but the experience of the Rustlers showed as the game progressed. The Rustlers led 32 – 19 at the half and eventually went on to a 91 – 42 victory. Tori Dugan led all Rustlers with 22 points and 5 assists and Bilge Topaloglu added 20 points and 9 rebounds.
The men's team is starting to get back in the playing mode after their first games of the second semester last weekend.
Friday, in a low-scoring affair, the Rustlers played some decent defense and scored when they needed. The score was tied after the first quarter and then the Rustlers surged ahead in the second going into the dressing room at the half with a 38 – 29 lead. The team maintained the lead in the second half and finished the night with a 64 – 56 victory. Artavis Holiday had a stellar game for the Rustlers scoring 27 points and hauling down 14 rebounds to lead the team.
Saturday afternoon the Grande Prairie Wolvers were determined not to lose two games on home court. The Rustlers and the home team battled for each point which resulted in a 39 – 35 lead for the Wolves at the half. The Wolves continued to build on their lead in each quarter which resulted in a 91 – 77 loss for the Rustlers. Leading all Rustler scorers was Rashon Russel who dropped down 26 points..
Next up for the Rustlers will be the King's Eagles on Thursday and then followed up by the Concordia Thunder on Friday.
