Rustlers Men's Soccer | Weekend Recap - Oct 19 & 20, 2019
The Rustlers men's soccer team concluded their regular season this weekend in Fort McMurray against the Keyano College Huskies. The Rustlers split their weekend series with the Huskies, losing 2-4 on Saturday and winning 2-1 on Sunday.
On Saturday, the game would remain scoreless until the last five minutes of the first half, when the Huskies would score their first. The Huskies would score 3 more times throughout the second half putting them up 4-0 over the Rustlers in the remaining 4 minutes of the game.
Back-to-back goals for the Rustlers from Carter Wall and Chase Cal (assisted by Grant Skoretz) put the Rustlers on the scoreboard in the remaining minutes of the game. The final score would be 4-2 in favour of the Huskies.
The Rustlers were without fourth year goalkeeper, Zach Wagner, and first year midfielder Hani Tekheste whom were sitting 1 game suspensions. Head coach Kevin Wagner said his team "struggle organizationally on the field and let up easy goals due to this."
Player of the game for the Rustlers was Carter Wall.
On Sunday the Rustlers looked to bounce back from the loss. The Rustlers gave up a goal early in the game in only the first 5 minutes putting them down 1-0.
The Rustlers defense remained strong for the rest of the game, not allowing any more goals and only 4 shots on goal by the Huskies.
The Rustlers would score their first goal of the game in the 33rd minute. The goal was scored by midfielder/striker Giordano Ciccacci, assisted by Elia Calabria. Oore Peters would put the Rustlers ahead of the Huskies in the final minutes of the game, assisted by Chase Cal.
The game would end with a score of 2-1 in favour of the Rustlers, signalling the end of their ACAC season.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was Zach Wagner.
Head coach Kevin Wagner commented on his team's performance after the game: "that was likely the best team performance we had to finish the season with players showing a higher level of maturity, awareness and execution in the attacking and defending thirds of the pitch."
