Rustlers Repeat as ACAC Mixed Curling Champions
March 3–5 Lakeland College played host to the 2023 ACAC Curling Championships at the Vermilion Curling Club. The Rustlers hosted the top Men's, Women's, and Mixed Curling teams in the ACAC. The only Rustler team to qualify this year was the Mixed team who started to gain momentum at the winter regional in January at the Avonair Curling Club in Edmonton.
On Friday to commence round robin play the Rustlers started the weekend off with an 8–1 victory over the NAIT Ooks in four ends and they then followed that up with an 8–4 victory against Red Deer Polytechnic.
Saturday the Rustlers finished the four team round robin with a 7–4 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs to finish with a 3 – 0 record. Finishing first the Rustlers then played in the 1–2 game against NAIT. The game was back and forth with the Ooks winning the game and earning a path straight to the gold medal game. The Rustlers then had to play their third game of the day against Red Deer to see who would meet NAIT in the championship game. Red Deer jumped out to a quick 3–0 lead in the first end but the Rustlers chipped away at the lead stealing a point in each of the next three ends to tie the game. They then went back and forth over the next four ends before the Rustlers were able to squeak out a 1-point victory.
Sunday in the Gold medal game the Rustlers would play NAIT for the third time in 3 days. Lakeland picked up one in the first and then proceeded to steal a couple of ends and slowly build on their lead. After 6 ends of play the Rustlers had built a 7–1 lead and the Ooks conceded victory. For two of the women on the team, it was their second win in 2 years and for the men it was their first ACAC Championship.
Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff on a successful season.
