Rustlers Curling | ACAC Championship Recap - Feb 27-29, 2020
The ACAC Curling Championships were hosted by Red Deer College this past weekend, and the Rustlers were represented in the Men's and Mixed Divisions.
On Friday, the first day of competition, the Rustler men narrowly defeated the Concordia Thunder 6-5. The mixed Rustlers squad defeated the Augustana Vikings 9-4.
On Saturday, the Rustler men lost to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks, 8-2 in their first game, and lost a close one to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans. They would finish their round-robin with a record of 1 win and 2 losses.
The mixed Rustlers squad started their Saturday with a win over the Grant MacEwan University Griffins, 6-5. They would then later fall to the NAIT Ooks 11-1. The mixed squad would finished with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss in the round robin.
The teams were then ranked first to fourth after round robin play, where first would play second and then third would play fourth. The Rustler men were seeded fourth, and lost to the third seeded NAIT Ooks, 8-2. This is where the tournament would end for the men's squad.
The mixed Rustler squad were seeded third and then matched up against the fourth seeded Augustana Vikings where they would defeat them 9-6.
This would advance the mixed squad to the ACAC Curling Championships semi-final where they would take on the NAIT Ooks. The Rustlers would lose a tough game to the Ooks 13-4, sending them to the bronze medal game.
In the bronze medal game, the mixed Rustlers squad took on the Augustana Vikings. The Rustlers would lose a close game to the Vikings, 6-5, putting them just short of the podium at these ACAC Curling Championships.
This concludes the season for the Rustlers Curling teams. Head Coach, Dusty Makichuk was honoured as the 2019-2020 Curling Coach of the Year at the ACAC Curling Championship banquet on February 28th.
