Rustlers Curling | Winter Regional -January 24-26, 2020
The ACAC Winter Curling Regional was hosted this past weekend in Edmonton by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks. The Rustlers sent a team in each category (men's, women's and mixed).
Friday, January 24 was day 1 of the curling regional, and after the first day the results for the Rustlers were:
- Men (0-2)
- Women (1-1)
- Mixed (1-1)
The men lost their opening game to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans 3-6, and they would go onto to lose their second game to the Red Deer College Kings 1-6.
The women lost their first game to the host NAIT Ooks 5-6 but defeated the Augustana Vikings in their second game 5-4.
The mixed team also lost their first game to the host NAIT Ooks with a score of 4-9, but bounced-back to play an impressive game against the SAIT Trojans where they would win with a score of 11-2.
At the end of day 2, Saturday, January 25, the results were as follows:
- Men (2-3)
- Women (2-2)
- Mixed (3-1)
The men were not fazed by their slow start to day 1 and took day 2 as a fresh start. This would pay off as the men won 2 of their 3 games on Saturday. They fell to the NAIT Ooks 5-7 but defeated the Grant MacEwan Griffins 7-6 and the Olds College Broncos 7-6.
The women faced a strong Grant MacEwan team to start day 2 and fell to the Griffins 5-8. The Rustler women would shake off the loss and go on to defeat the Red Deer Queens 8-3 to finish day 2 with a record of 2-2 and tied for 2nd place.
The mixed Rustler team would win their two games on Saturday over the Augustana Vikings, 13-10 and 6-3 over the Red Deer Kings and Queens. This would conclude their day 2 at a record of 3-1, good for 2nd place in the mixed division.
Sunday, January 26 was the final day for the Winter Curling Regional and the Rustler teams looked to go out on a high note. The results at the end of day 3 were:
- Men (2-4)
- Women (2-3)
- Mixed (3-2)
The men's team lost their only game of the day to the Concordia Thunder 5-3, finishing their tournament with a record of 2-4, which placed them in a tie-breaker situation with the Grant MacEwan Griffins. The men's side was a tight race, however, the Rustlers would win the tiebreaker, earning them a spot at the ACAC Conference Championships hosted by Red Deer College late next month.
The women's team would start their day 3 with a win over the Olds College Broncos 5-3 but finish the day with a close 5-6 loss to the Concordia Thunder. The women would finish with a record of 2-3 which would not be enough for them to move on to Conference Championships.
Lastly, the mixed team would lose their only game on the final day of the Winter Regional to the MacEwan Griffins, finishing with a record of 3-2 and a berth to the ACAC Conference Championships at the end of next month.
The men's and mixed team will be travelling to Red Deer College to take part in the ACAC Conference Championships from February 28 to March 1.
