Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - November 20, 2024
This past weekend was a slightly wuiter one for Rustlers Athletics, but there were some notable results for Lakeland College's student athletes.
Volleyball had a South Division road trip, starting with Friday's matches against the SAIT Trojans in Calgary and a stop in Lethbridge Saturday to take on the Kodiaks. The women were looking to extend their undefeated streak this season to seven matches, while the men were 4-1, looking for a good result against a good Trojans team and an excellent Kodiaks squad.
No surprises occurred in the women's matches, a pair of 3-0 victories by scores of 25-10, 25-22, 25-15 over SAIT and 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 over Lethbridge. Lana Matthews compiled 20 kills, 11 digs, 3 service aces and a block in just six sets, earning her ACAC Athlete of the Week honours. Emma Letkeman and Emm Jeffs were the POG's of the respective matches.
The men had a more competitive match against the Trojans, winning in four sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23). Brock Tomyn had 9 kills, 6 aces and 6 digs, while Gabe Bjorkas and Aiden Maier each had 10 kills. The following evening, the Kodiaks push the Rustlers with aggressive serving and attacking, resulting in a 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 18-25 Lakeland loss. Bjorkas had 9 kills, 2 aces and a block to receive POG, while Tomyn had a team high 12 kills, plus a block and an ace. The loss drops the men's team to 5-2, still good for second in the North Division.
Women's hockey hosted the RDP Queens, their third meeting of the season, looking to extend their winning streak to 10 games. Despite the visitors scoring the opening goal in the first period and outshooting the hosts 24-22, Lakeland stayed strong for the rest of the game, scoring twice in the second and once again in the third to win 3-1. Kylie Perry had a goal and an assist, Calla Kampen was the POG thanks to her game winner with seconds left in period two. Mackenzie Gould-Sharpe made 23 saves for the win.
The hockey squad then hosted the Saskatoon Prairie Blaze in an exhibition contest on Saturday, winning 7-1. They will next face the NAIT Ooks this weekend at the Russ Robertson on Friday and in Edmonton on Saturday in a matchup that could decide first place in the league standings.
Volleyball is on a bye week, while the basketball teams have a huge weekend at home. Movie Trivia Night is this Friday, when the Rustlers host the SAIT Trojans, who boast two nationally ranked teams. Then Saturday night, which is Community Basketball Night in Lloydminster, will feature the Lethbridge Kodiaks, two more teams looking to figure into the playoff picture in the South Division.
During halftime of the men's game on Friday, Rustlers Athletics will present the All-Conference awards to Gracey Smithson, Gavin Quinlan and Josh Malin of women's and men's soccer. Make sure you're there by 8:30 PM!
