Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - October 7, 2024
Rustlers Soccer
Rustlers soccer was on the road for a critical tilt against NAIT, while several Rustler teams competed in exhibition play.
The women's soccer team took the pitch with a small chance left of competing for a playoff spot, which would have to start with a win against their rivals, the Ooks. The last time these programs met was during futsal season, where Lakeland lost in the quarterfinals. After allowing a goal in the first half, the Rustlers responded with a great effort to start the second, getting an early tie on a team allowed goal. After playing hard through the rest of the half, Darian Pluhator scored in extra time to seal the 2-1 victory.
The win improves Lakeland women's soccer to 4-5, with a rematch against NAIT scheduled for Oct. 13 in Lloydminster.
On the men's side, the game still had playoff implications depending on who could earn the win. The opening half was rough for the Rustlers, as they fell behind 2-0 in the 42ndminute. In the second, a flurry of offence from Lakeland was capped by a Yassin Hassen game tying goal, after which neither team could add a goal to break said tie.
Men's soccer now sit at 4-2-3, third in the North Division. The rematch against NAIT on Sunday will decide their playoff fate.
Rustlers Basketball
In exhibition play, women's and men's basketball took on the RDP Queens and Kings at the Lloyd Campus Gymnasium. Both women's contests were blowouts, with Lakeland coming on top 84-45 and 84-54, while the men split the weekend 107-90 and 75-84.
Rustlers Volleyball
Women's volleyball also competed over the weekend in Edmonton at the Grant MacEwan tournament, facing both CCAA and U-Sports competition. The Rustlers won matches against ACAC opponents RDP, Augustana and King's, as well as against Memorial University and the University of Winnipeg.
