Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - September 16, 2024
The Lakeland College athletics season is now full steam ahead for the next two months.
Men's and women's soccer held their home opener Saturday afternoon at VLA Fields, after a pair of road victories Thursday night in Lac La Biche. The women's team waxed the Portage Voyageurs 9-0, off of another four point performance for Gracey Smithson (3 goals, 1 assist) and multiple goa games from Megan Hockley and Darian Pluhator. The men's team won 2-0 Thursday, with Ben Touw earning POG.
Saturday saw a strong start for the Rustlers women's team, as Smithson got them on the board first, but the Eagles were able to capitalize on their scoring chances three times, twice in the second half. Sydney Blechinger was the Player of the Game. This drops the squad to 3-1 on the year.
In the men's contest, a brilliant strike from Nathan Tran opened the scoring three minutes in, which the Rustlers held onto for most of the game. Then, Josh Malin scored on a deep ball to make the score 2-0, their third straight game with that final result. Malin was the POG, as the men improve to 3-0-1.
Women's hockey was home at the Russ Robertson for several exhibition games against club teams form Alberta. They won a pair of contests against the Sherwood Park Steele, before getting another two victories against the Cochrane Chaos.
It's a busy weekend coming up, with women's basketball, men's basketball and women's hockey all playing exhibition games in Saskatoon. Men's and women's volleyball hold their annual home tournament, with teams from the ACAC and the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC). Finally, our soccer squads host a critical pair of home games against the Keyano Huskies, with kick off at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM both Saturday and Sunday at VLA Fields.
