Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - February 13
February 15, 2023
Lakeland had another successful weekend of athletic prowess, with several teams earning playoff berths.
In women's hockey, the Rustlers completed a sweep of the Olds Broncos in style. After a 2-0 win on Friday, Saturday's action went to a shootout, with the score 1-1. After several attempts failed to score, Lakeland's Hailey Carothers produced a nifty shootout winner. This moves the hockey team to 9-6-1-1, one point back of second.
Volleyball managed a pair of sweeps again, with the Rattlers and the Clippers in town. The women won in particularly convincing fashion, (25-9, 25-9, 25-12 over MHC and 25-7, 25-16, 25-16 over Briercrest), while the men won 3-0 and 3-1 in their matches. Jana Laing posted 58 assists, six aces and 18 digs for the women, while 5th year Gustavo Lobato had 10 kills Friday and came off the off the bench in his final regular season match to get the final point on Saturday.
The women's squad finished the regular season 18-1 and have a bye weekend before the ACAC Championship in Red Deer, while the men are seeded 4th at 12-7.
In basketball, it was almost a clean sweep on the road trip in Medicine Hat and Caronport. The women's team won 82-49 over the Rattlers, but lost a tight one to the Clippers 61-59, while the men won their contests 95-75 and 101-58.
Lakeland's futsal teams were also in action at the North Regional in Lac La Biche. The women narrowly missed qualifying for the ACAC Championship, finishing 2-2-1. On the men's side, the Rustlers went 3-2, qualifying for the tournament thanks to a greater goal margin than the King's Eagles. Giordano Ciccacci had a monster weekend, scoring eight goals and adding two assists in the five games.
That championship will take place in March, while other Rustlers teams are in action this weekend. Both basketball squads wrap up their regular seasons with games against Ambrose on Friday and Lethbridge on Saturday, with the latter serving as Senior Night for 5th year guard Angela Baran. Men's volleyball will also be at home Saturday, when they host a play-in match against the NWP Wolves at 2 PM.
