3 Rustler Teams Heading to the Final Four
This past weekend all 4 of the Rustler Volleyball teams competed in the first round of the ACAC playoffs hoping to secure a trip to the ACAC Final four in their sport. The men's volleyball and men's basketball teams played at home on Friday to see if they could move on to the North Division semifinal.
The men's basketball team started the playoff runoff against the visiting Concordia Thunder with a 78 – 64 victory in a tight game until the 4th quarter when the Rustlers went on a 22 – 9 run. Artavis Holiday led the Rustlers with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The men's volleyball team followed up with a match against the Grande Prairie Wolves. The injury-plagued Rustlers mustered enough drive and momentum to secure a 3 sets to 0 victory. Cam Jones led the Rustlers with 10 kills 4 serve aces and 2 blocks.
Sunday the Men's Volleyball team headed to Edmonton to take on the number one team in the north division the NAIT Ooks. The Rustlers earned a hard-fought victory in the first set but were unable to maintain the momentum and fell to the Ooks 3 sets to 1.
Also on the road at Augustana were the men's basketball team who also competed in a battle with the Vikings to see who would move on to the final four at SAIT. The game was back and forth with either team being able to build a substantial lead. The Rustlers inched ahead near the end of the game and held on for a 60 – 55 win. The men will now move onto the final four at SAIT.
Also on Sunday, the Rustler women's teams hosted the north semi-final games. In the afternoon the Women's Volleyball team played host to the Keyano Huskies. The Rustlers were able to get out to early leads in all 3 sets to secure the 3 – 0 set victory and punched their ticket to the ACAC Women's volleyball final four that will be hosted in Red Deer. Jenay Varga added to her season totals with 11 kills, 5 serve aces, and 1 stuff block.
The weekend finished off with the 16 and 0 women's basketball team hosting the King's University Eagles. The game was a physical one where the Rustlers jumped out to a 23 – 12 lead on their way to a 69 – 54 victory. Hailey Somers led all Rustlers with 21 points. The Rustlers will now host the top 4 teams this upcoming weekend at Lakeland. If the Rustlers can win their first game they will secure a seat at the CCAA national tournament.
