Rustlers Women's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - January 10 & 11, 2020
The Rustlers women's volleyball team opened the second half of their season with two wins over the Concordia Thunder.
On Friday night in Edmonton, the Rustlers put on a dominant performance beating the Thunder 3-1. The scores of the first and second sets were 25-14 and 25-14 in favour of the Rustlers.
It was in the third set that the Thunder made things interesting. The Rustlers controlled most of the third set. However, some ball control breakdown on the Rustler side allowed for a closed game near the end.
The Rustlers had several match points but each time the Thunder would not let up and consistently pushed back, until they ousted the Rustlers 30-28 to win and force a fourth set.
The Rustlers quickly shook off the third set loss and went onto control the fourth set winning it 25-13, solidifying their first win of the second semester.
The Rustlers were led by fourth-year right side hitter Bailee Weiler with 11 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace and 4 digs in the match. Close behind her was Player of the Game, Jenay Varga with 10 kills, 2 aces and 11 digs for the Rustlers. Fourth-year libero Belle de Vries managed a team high 13 digs, and seemingly controlled the back court.
The Rustlers would carry their winning momentum over into Saturday where they would defeat the Thunder in 3 quick sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-15).
The Rustlers were solid both offensively and defensively throughout the whole match, not allowing the Thunder any room for error. Friday night's player of the game, Jenay Varga had a massive game with a team-high 16 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs and a 59% kill efficiency. Bailee Weiler added 7 kills, 1 block and 1 ace of her own. First-year outside hitter Madison Blain also added 6 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces and 12 digs for the Rustlers.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was first-year setter Jana Laing with 2 blocks, 2 aces, 8 digs and 30 assists.
This upcoming weekend the Rustlers will host the Keyano College Huskies in their double-header home series. The women will hit homecourt at 6 pm on Friday, January 17th and at 1 pm on Saturday, January 18th.
The volleyball teams will be having a Food Drive on Friday night where fans can bring a non-perishable food item to get into the games for free! All donations will be going to the Salvation Army in Lloydminster.
