Rustlers Women's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - Nov 1 & 2, 2019
The Lakeland women's volleyball team got their first win of the season this past weekend against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks.
On Friday, the Rustlers defeated the Ooks in 4 sets; however, on Saturday they would fall to the Ooks in 4 sets.
Friday evening, the Rustlers traveled to Edmonton to take on the Ooks. The Rustlers defeated the Ooks 3 sets to 1 (25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16).
The first set began with lots of back and forth played between the Rustlers and Ooks, nearly trading point for point. The Rustlers would go on a run near the end of the set to finish it off 25-18.
The second set was another Rustler-dominant set, 25-18. But the Ooks would not let up just yet, with some gritty defense on the Ooks side they would come back from a 6-0 deficit and ultimately win the third set 25-21, forcing a fourth set.
The fourth set was a rocky start for the Rustlers, but they managed to find their groove and finish the game on a strong note, winning the fourth set 25-16.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was fourth-year outside/setter, Bailee Weiler with 9 kills, 7 assists, and 13 digs. Fourth-year outside Belle de Vries had 14 kills and 20 digs, and fourth-year middle Brooklyn Boehm had 10 kills.
Saturday evening was on home court for the Rustlers, where they should have been more comfortable. The Rustlers fell to the Ooks in 4 sets (21-25, 24-26, 25-10, 21-25).
A slow start of the Rustlers had them losing the first set 21-25, which came along with a deflating loss in the second set, going to extra points, 24-26.
The Rustlers seemed to find some life and ran their offensive and defensive systems nearly flawlessly, winning the third set 25-10.
With what looked like a turning point for the Rustlers at the end of the third set, the Rustlers rolled into the fourth set with more confidence. Unfortunately, errors at key points in the game would cause the Rustlers to be defeated by Ooks 21-25, ending the match.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was first-year outside hitter Jenay Varga with 18 kills, 2 service aces, and 10 digs. Weiler had 12 kills in the match, and first-year outside Madison Blain had 10.
The lady Rustlers now sitting at a season record of just 1-3 are heading into a few weekends of "must-wins." The Rustler volleyball teams will be traveling to Fort McMurray next weekend to take on the Keyano College Huskies. You can watch the games live on acactv.ca.
The next home game for the women's volleyball team will be the following weekend on Saturday, November 16th, at 6 pm with the men to follow.
