WVB Weekend Recap | January 25 & 26, 2019
After a sweep on the road last weekend, the Lakeland Rustlers women's volleyball team returned to their home court this past weekend for a matchup against the Grande Prairie Wolves. Heading into the weekend, the Rustlers sat in second place in the ACAC North Division standing with a 16-2 record.
The Rustlers came ready to play Friday night, controlling the match from the opening serve. Lakeland made quick work of the Wolves in the first set, winning 25-10. The Wolves bounced back in the second, keeping with the Rustlers for the entirety of the set. Lakeland had a couple of timely errors that gave the Wolves a chance to come back, but the Rustlers wouldn't let that happen, taking the second set 25-21. The Rustlers carried the momentum from the second set win into the third, winning the set 25-18, taking the match 3-0.
The Rustlers were led by fifth-year outside hitter Ahnika Kuse, who finished the match with 11 kills, 6 digs, and 3 service aces, earning her player of the game. Third-year setter Bailee Weiler added 10 kills and 4 digs for the Rustlers, who also got 30 assists and 4 digs from fifth-year setter Rae Sigurdson.
Looking for the weekend sweep Saturday afternoon, the Rustlers came out strong in the opening set of the rematch. Lakeland took the lead early in the first set and never looked back, winning 25-15. In the second set, the Rustlers continued to control the match on both sides of the ball, with strong offensive play and good serve receive. The Rustlers went on to win the second set 25-16. The Wolves wouldn't go away easily in the third set, pushing the Rustlers the whole way. Lakeland, however, proved to be the stronger team, taking the set 25-23, and the match 3-0.
Leading the way for the Rustlers was fifth-year outside hitter Shelby Becker with 9 kills and 9 digs, while Sigurdson finished with 35 assists and 7 digs. Player of the game for the Rustlers was third-year middle Brooklyn Boehm finished with 7 kills, two digs, two blocks, and a service ace.
With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Rustlers sit 1st in the ACAC North Division standings with an 18-2 record.
The Rustlers return home on Friday when they face The King's University Eagles to determine who will be the #1 seed in come playoffs. Friday's match is set to get underway at 6 pm.
