WVB Weekend Recap | October 19 & 20, 2018
The Lakeland Rustlers Women's Volleyball team took on the NAIT Ooks over the weekend. The Rustlers were 2-0 heading into the second weekend of the ACAC Women's Volleyball season, while the Ooks had yet to play in the regular season, with the Rustlers being their first matchup of the season.
The two teams played in Lloydminster Friday night, in what would be the home opener for the Rustlers. The Rustlers proved to be the stronger, more experienced team in the first two sets, winning easily, while the Ooks looked like they had the season opener nerves. The Rustlers won the first set 25-12 and followed it with another dominant second set winning 25-11. The Ooks started to find their footing in the third set and pushed the Rustlers early on, but in the end, the Rustlers were too strong, winning 25-16.
The Rustlers were led by fifth year hitters Ahnika Kuse, and Shelby Becker with 11 and nine kills respectively. Fifth year setter Rae Sigurdson ran the offense and distributed the ball, finishing the match with 27 assists. third year middle Brooklyn Boehm had five kills and three blocks, earning her Player of the Game.
The Rustlers hit the road Saturday night, traveling to Edmonton to take on the same Ooks team. The Rustlers continued their dominance of the Ooks in the first two sets, winning them easily 25-18 and 25-10. The Ooks play improved by the third set, and they pushed the Rustlers, but the experience of the Rustlers helped them to earn the 25-22 set win and take the match 3-0.
Kuse and Becker once again led the Rustlers with nine and seven kills respectively, while Boehm and second year setter Bailee Weiler each added 5. Sigurdson continued to show why she was an ACAC All-Conference and CCAA All-Canadian award winner last season, finishing the match with 26 assists.
The Rustlers (4-0) have a bye next weekend but will return to the court November 2nd and 3rd against the Concordia Thunder (0-2).
