Women's Volleyball Weekend Recap | February 11,2018
After being handed their first loss of the season last weekend, the Lakeland Rustlers Women's Volleyball team got back in the win column with two wins over the Augustana Vikings on the weekend.
The Rustlers defeated the Vikings in 3 sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-18) Friday night in Lloydminster. The Rustlers got out to a 5-1 lead to start the first set with strong serving. The Rustlers would extend their lead to 15-7 and take control of the set, going on to win 25-16. The Vikings would open up the second set with a 3-1 lead before the teams would go back and forth. The Rustlers would take a 9-8 lead, which they extended to 16-12 before they would win the set 25-18. The third set started off with the teams once again going back and forth before the Rustlers would open up a 16-8 lead. The Rustlers extended their lead to 16-8 and the Vikings could not come back, as the Rustlers hung on to win 25-18.
The Rustlers were led by 5th-year middle and Player of the Game Alyssa Grondin who had ten kills, three digs, and a service ace. 4th-year outside Shelby Becker had six kills and eight digs, while 1st-year libero Hailee Mckenna had seven digs in the third set for the Rustlers. 4th-year setter distributed the ball for the Rustlers scoring attack, finishing the match with 30 assists.
The Rustlers travelled to Camrose on Saturday and once again defeated the Vikings in 3 sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-23). The Rustlers continued their strong play from Friday night in the first set, controlling the set on their way to winning 25-17. The Rustlers made more errors in the second and third sets, allowing the Vikings to keep the sets close. The Rustlers relied on their experience to come out with two close set wins to take the match in three.
The Rustlers were led by 3rd-year right-side Avery Maginel with nine kills and three digs, while 4th-year outside hitter Ahnika Kuse added six kills and eight digs. Sigurdson continued to distribute the ball well for the Rustlers, finishing with 26 assists and eight digs, earning her Player of the Game.
The Rustlers play their final two regular-season games next weekend against the 17-5 King's Eagles. The Rustlers travel to Edmonton Friday night to take on the Eagles before hosting Saturday night at 6:00 pm.
