Rustlers Women's Soccer | Weekend Recap - Sept 28 & 29, 2019
The Rustlers women's soccer team split their weekend series against the Portage College Voyageurs and The King's University Eagles. The Rustlers came out with a 10-0 win over the Voyageurs, and a close loss of 2-4 against the Eagles.
Saturday's game at Portage College in Lac la Biche was a strong one for the women. Head coach, Laith Matlak said "the goal was to play good soccer and get the win," which is exactly what they did. Matlak also wanted to "keep everyone focused and ready for Sunday's battle against King's."
The Rustlers took on the Voyageurs just last weekend in Lloydminster, and the women used to this to their advantage against a familiar team. Four goals were scored in the first half and six in the second.
Sarah Costa led the scoring for the Rustlers with four goals. Davis Bone followed with three goals while Kendall Basky, Teigan McDonald, and Rachel Stein added to the total with one goal each.
Also, the Rustlers only allowed three shots on goal, a testament to their strong defensive line.
The Rustlers returned to home field on Sunday to face The King's University Eagles. The Rustlers came out strong and went up early, with Kimberlea Pfiel scoring in the first 5 minutes.
The game would remain 1-0 into the second half, where the Eagles would score two quick goals of their own at 55 and 58 minutes. The Rustlers would counter with a goal from Sarah Costa in the 72nd minute to tie it up.
The Eagles would ultimately capitalize on the Rustlers exhaustion late in the game scoring two more goals to close out the match. Despite the loss, Matluk was "extremely impressed with the team's development and how far we have come together!"
The player of the game for the Rustlers was second-year Emma Lang.
The Rustlers will return to VLA field next weekend in a double-header matchup against the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves. Kick-off is at 12 pm for the women on Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6.
