Women's Soccer Weekend Recap | October 14 - 15
The Lakeland Women's soccer team dropped two games at home over the weekend to the Lethbridge Kodiaks and the Medicine Hat Rattlers.
On a cold, windy Saturday, the Lethbridge Kodiaks defeated the Lakeland Rustlers 2-1. The Kodiaks controlled the ball for much of the first half, with many scoring opportunities. The Rustlers also had chances to score, but neither team could find the back of the net, and the teams headed into halftime tied at 0. Lakeland opened the scoring in the second half with a goal by #9 Jordyn Stratychuk in the 55th minute.
The Kodiaks responded in the 62nd minute with a goal by #19 Brooklyn Bellavance. Lethbridge added to their lead in the 80th minute with a goal by #9 Payden Olsen. Lakeland had chances to tie the game in the final 10 minutes, but could not capitalize.

On Sunday, the Medicine Hat Rattlers defeated the Rustlers 1-0 in what would be a well-fought match by both teams. The Rattlers has early scoring opportunities and #3 Jordyn bell-Hamm found the back of the net in the 16th minute to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead. Late in the first half, the Rustlers had good chances to score and did manage to score one goal, but it was called back for offside. In the second half, much of the play was in the middle of the field. Both teams had scoring chances, but no one was able to score.
Danielle Blacklock made 14 saves for the Rustlers and was named Player of the Game.
Rustlers Head Coach Kevin Wagner was happy with what he saw from his team this weekend. "Last time we played them we were -8," Wagner said, "and this time we were -2. Training has been good, and the girls see that we are close. We play well when they aren't playing afraid to lose."
Looking forward to next weekend, Wagner suspects it will be similar to the game against Medicine Hat. "We didn't do well last time against Red Deer," Wagner said. I suspect it will be similar to Medicine Hat that if we defend well, we should be able to give ourselves a chance."
The Rustlers will play their final game of the season next Saturday at 2:00 pm versus the Red Deer Queens.
