2019 Rustlers WFUT Championship Recap
The Lakeland Rustlers women's futsal team was in Lethbridge over the weekend for the ACAC Futsal Championships, hosted by Lethbridge College.
The Rustlers started off the weekend taking on the SAIT Trojans. SAIT took a 2-0 lead at the half and Lakeland could never recover, dropping their opening game 5-2. Player of the game for the Rustlers was first-year Sterling Cannan.
The second match of the day for the Rustlers had them facing the Ambrose Lions. The Rustlers once again fell behind 2-0 after 25 minutes but cut the Lions lead in half to only trail by 1 in the second half. In the end, the Rustlers could not complete the comeback, dropping the match 2-1. Player of the game for the Rustlers was third-year Nikki Boutin.
Saturday, the Rustlers first match of the day saw them taking on the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings. It was a defensive battle between the two teams in the first half, as they remained tied at 0 at the halfway point of the game. In the second half, both teams would be able to find the back of the net, with the Rustlers outscoring the Vikings to take the game 2-1. Player of the game for the Rustlers was first-year Krystal Penner.
The Rustlers faced the host Lethbridge Kodiaks in their second game of the day, which was a must win to keep their playoff hopes alive. It was a battle on both sides of the ball in the first half, with the Kodiaks scoring the lone goal to take a 1-0 lead at the half. In the second half, the Rustlers were unable to find the back of the net and gave up three more goals to the Kodiaks, as they dropped the game 4-0.
With the loss, the Rustlers did not qualify for Sunday's medal round games. The Rustlers finished the ACAC Futsal Championships 4th in their pool with a 1-3 record, to conclude the futsal season.
