Rustlers Women's Basketball | Weekend Recap - Feb 28 & 29, 2020
The Rustlers women's basketball team finished their regular season with two wins over the Concordia Thunder this past weekend.
On Friday night in Edmonton, the Rustlers won a nail-biting thriller over the Thunder, 78-76.
The Rustlers would go up big in the first half by a score of 44-27. The first-half charge was led by third-year guard, Jaden Cook with 1- points, fifth year forward, Brianne Hergott with 9 points, and fourth year guard, Tori Dugan with 6 points.
The second half was a challenging one for the Rustlers as they struggled defensively allowing the Thunder to outscore them and tighten their lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Thunder had closed the gap to only 7 points, 67-60.
In the fourth quarter the Thunder would work to continually close the gap and tried to contain the Rustlers' offense. With 3 minutes to go the Thunder took a lead 72-71 over the Rustlers.
The Rustlers would respond with a jump shot from third-year forward, Bilge Topaloglu to put them back on top. The Thunder would respond and then the Rustlers again, the teams trading basket for basket in the final minutes of the game.
The Rustlers called a timeout with one minute left on the clock and they were down by 1 75-76. Tori Dugan drew a foul from the Thunder and headed to the free throw line where she'd make one of them to tie the game 76-76 with only seconds left. The winning basket was a layup from Bilge Topaloglu to put the Rustlers back on top 78-76 over the Thunder.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was Bilge Topaloglu with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Brianne Hergott added 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist, and Jaden Cook had 16 points, and 3 rebounds.
On Saturday night, on homecourt for the last time this season the Rustlers defeated the Thunder 84-64.
At the half, the Rustlers were up 39-36 over the Thunder, In the third quarter, the Rustlers would extend their lead to 13. The third quarter charge was led by fourth-year guard, Angela Baran with 6 points, Bilge Topaloglu, Tori Dugan, and Jaden Cook with 4 points each.
In the fourth quarter the Rustlers would further stretch their lead to 20 points, to win the game 84-64.
The Rustlers were led by fourth-year guard, Tori Dugan with 15 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists, and 1 steal. Jaden Cook added 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals for the Rustlers, and fifth-year Brianne Hergott had 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals in the game.
Hergott was named the Rustlers player of the game in her final game on homecourt. Following the victory, the Rustlers took a few moments to recognize and celebrate Brianne Hergott's 5-year ACAC basketball career.
The Rustlers women's basketball team has completed their regular season with a record of 19-5, good for second place in the North Division. They are heading to the ACAC Conference Championships hosted by Medicine Hat College this upcoming week, where they will take on the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in their quarterfinal game at 1 pm on Thursday, March 5th.
