Rustlers Women's Basketball | Weekend Recap - Nov 8 & 9, 2019
The Rustlers women's basketball team continued their winning streak this past weekend with two wins over the Keyano College Huskies on Friday night and Saturday afternoon in Lloydminster. The Rustlers have improved to a 5-1 record this season.
On Friday night, the Rustlers managed to defeat the currently undefeated and #12 nationally ranked team in the country 67-63.
The Rustlers would begin the game by controlling the pace of the play. A strong first half from the Rustles allowed for them to have some cushion heading into the fourth quarter, where the Huskies would outscore them 29-17. This push was not enough for the Huskies as the Rustlers still came out on top.
The Rustlers had individual players step up when needed and showed strong will during the Huskies comeback in the fourth quarter.
The Rustlers were led by third-year forward Bilge Topalogu with 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 block. Fifth-year forward Brianne Hergott had 10 points, and 8 rebounds in the game, and fourth-year guard Ally Pilgrim had 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was the first-year guard Tayla Pipes with 5 points and 4 defensive rebounds.
Saturday afternoon, the Rustlers conquered the Huskies once again 64-57. The Rustlers struggled to find their groove at the start of the game, and Keyano was a lot stronger rebounding in the first half.
After being down at the half 29-25, and still being down 4 at the end of the third quarter, a strong fourth quarter allowed for the Rustlers to defeat the Huskies. The Rustlers had key players step up in the fourth quarter and played as a team to come back and win the game.
Leading the fourth-quarter charge was fourth-year guard Ally Pilgrim and third-year guard Jaden Cook with 7 points each. Pilgrim led the team with 14 points in the game. Brianne Hergott contributed 13 points and had a team-high 9 rebounds in the game.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was Jaden Cook with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist.
The Rustlers women's basketball team will be back in action next weekend against the Concordia Thunder on Friday, November 15th, at 6 pm with the men to follow.
