Rustlers Women's Basketball | Weekend Recap - Oct 24 & 25, 2019
The Rustlers women's basketball team opened their 2019-2020 Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) season this past weekend. The women faced the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks and came away with a loss and a win.
Thursday evening the Rustlers travelled to Edmonton to take on the Ooks in their home gym. The Rustlers had a strong start, ending the first quarter leading the game by 5, 21-16.
The second quarter was a challenging one for the Rustlers, and they just couldn't seem to find the basket, only scoring 6 points in the quarter. At the half, the Rustlers were down 27-32.
The Rustlers found their footing again in the third quarter outscoring the Ooks 21 points to 17. The score at the end of the third quarter was 49-48 for the Ooks.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Ooks would outscore the Rustlers 21 points to 17, ending the game 70-65 in favour of the Ooks.
Third-year guard Jaden Cook had 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, earning her player of the game honours. Fifth-year forward Brianne Hergott and third-year guard Hailey Somers each added 12 points to the board, and Hergott had 5 rebounds in the game.
Friday evening's rematch would take place in Lloydminster in the home of the Rustlers. The Rustlers looked to rebound from their loss the night before, and they did just that. The Rustlers would dominate in every quarter, winning the game by 21 points.
In the opening quarter, the Rustlers outscored the Ooks 20-16. Third-year forward Bilge Topaloglu had 7 points and 2 rebounds.
At the half, the Rustlers were up 42-33. Fourth-year guards Angela Baran and Ally Pilgrim had 6 points each in the second quarter.
The Rustlers continued their domination into the third quarter outscoring the Ooks 21 to 15. Hergott had 7 points and 5 rebounds in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Rustlers would score 20, and the Ooks would only get 14, resulting in a win for the Rustlers and a final score of 83-62. Baran added 5 more points to the board and had 5 rebounds to finish the game, earning her player of the game honours.
The Rustlers will be back in action this weekend against The King's University Eagles on Friday, November 1 at 6 pm.
