WBB Weekend Recap | January 25 & 26, 2019
After getting a split at home last weekend, the Rustlers traveled to Grande Prairie over the weekend, looking for their first sweep of 2019.
The Rustlers came out ready to play Friday night, knocking down shots in the first quarter. After ten minutes of play, Lakeland led Grande Prairie 24-15. In the second quarter, the Rustlers continued to knock down shots and extend their lead. At the half, the Rustlers led 40-24. In the second half, the Rustlers were able to take advantage of mismatches offensively and force the Wolves into tough shots on the other end. Lakeland had a clear size advantage, allowing them to see over the Grande Prairie defenders and find the open cutters for easy baskets. The Rustlers led 50-28 heading into the fourth quarter, and extended their lead in the final ten minutes, winning the game 61-34.
Leading the way for the Rustlers was fourth-year forward Brianne Hergott with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists, earning her player of the game. Third-year guard Ally Pilgrim added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Saturday night, it was the Wolves who would come out to the quick start, as the Wolves would jump out to a 13-9 lead after ten minutes. In the second quarter, the Rustlers began knocking down shots and locking in defensively. At the half, the Rustlers led 29-26. The Rustlers had a strong third on both sides of the ball, limiting the Wolves to just 5 points while scoring 21 of their own. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Rustlers had opened up a solid lead, 50-26. The physicality increased in the fourth quarter, with both teams struggling to score. The Rustlers were able to hold onto and extend their lead, outscoring the Wolves by 4 in the quarter, on the way to a 62-34 win.
Pilgrim lead the way for the Rustlers Saturday night with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals, earning her player of the game. Hergott had another strong game for the Rustlers, finish with a double-double, 12 points, and 12 rebounds.
Next weekend, the Rustlers face The King's University Eagles, as Lakeland continues to fight for a playoff spot. The Rustlers will be in Edmonton on Friday to open the weekend series, before returning home for the rematch Saturday night at 6 pm.
