WBB Weekend Recap | November 9 & 10, 2018
The Lakeland Rustlers Women's Basketball team was in Fort McMurray over the weekend to take on the Keyano Huskies. The Rustlers came away from the weekend with a split, defeating the Huskies Friday night before losing the rematch Saturday afternoon.
It was a low scoring game Friday night with neither team cracking the 50 point mark. The first quarter was a physical battle, with both teams drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line. After the first quarter, the Rustlers led 11-9. Both teams shooting percentages went down in the second quarter, with the Rustlers shooting 22.2% from the field and the Huskies shooting 14.3%. Neither team scored more than ten points in the quarter, and the Rustlers took a 21-16 lead into halftime. The Rustlers opened up the game in the second half, scoring 23 points in the quarter and holding the Huskies to 14. The 23 points third quarter helped the Rustlers, as they only scored three points in the fourth quarter, on the way to a 47-37 win.
The Rustlers were led by second year forward Bilge Topaloglu with 13 points, nine rebounds an assist and a block, earning her Player of the Game. The Rustlers also got a strong performance from third year guard Ally Pilgrim with 12 points, nine rebounds, an assist and a steal.
Saturday, the Huskies took the lead early and never looked back. The Rustlers struggled to hit shots and rebound the ball, leading to them getting outscored in each of the four quarters. The Rustlers trailed 14-9 after the first quarter and 29-21 at the half. The Rustlers shooting and rebounding improved in the second half, but they had dug themselves too much of a whole, losing the game 66-53.
The Rustlers were led by Pilgrim with 14 points, six rebounds, two blocks, an assist, and a steal, earning her Player of the Game. Fourth year forward Brianne Hergott added seven points and eight rebounds for the Rustlers.
The Rustlers now sit at 3-5 with four games remaining in the first semester.
The Rustlers will take on the King Eagles (2-6) Friday, November 16th in Lloydminster at 6 pm, and travel to Edmonton on Saturday, November 17th for the rematch.
The Rustlers will then have a bye week before their final games of the semester against the Grande Prairie Wolves (0-6). The Rustlers will host the Wolves on Friday, November 30th at 6 pm and Saturday, December 1st at 1 pm.
