It was a tale of two very different games for the Lakeland Rustlers Women's Basketball team on the weekend, as they took on the Concordia Thunder. Friday night in Lloydminster, the Rustlers defeated the Thunder in convincing fashion 74-54, while Saturday night in Edmonton, the Rustlers would struggle, losing 62-51.
It was a high scoring first quarter in Lloydminster Friday night as the Rustlers put up 27 points in the first ten minutes. The Thunder put up 25 points of their own, and the Rustlers led by two heading into the second. The defensive intensity for both teams picked up in the second quarter, with the Rustlers holding the Thunder to just nine points in the quarter.
At the half, the Rustlers led 41-34. Another strong quarter by the Rustlers on both ends of the floor helped them extend their lead in the third quarter, leading 60-40 heading into the fourth. The Thunder tried to fight their way back into the game in the fourth quarter, but the Rustlers held onto their 20-point lead, winning 74-54.
The Rustlers were led by third year guard Tori Dugan with 13 points, five assists and three steals, while second year guard Hailey Somers added 13 points, three assists, two rebounds, and two steals.
It was a different game for the Rustlers Saturday night, as the Rustlers struggled on both ends of the floor from the opening tip. The Rustlers only managed to score four points in the first quarter and trailed the Thunder 16-4 after ten minutes. The Rustlers began to find ways to score in the second quarter, outscoring the Thunder by four in the quarter, but the Rustlers still trailed 30-22 at the half.
The third quarter was another low scoring one for both teams, and the Rustlers could not cut into the Thunder lead. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Rustlers trailed 42-31. In the fourth quarter, the Rustlers made a strong push, cutting the Thunder lead to two, but could not get any closer, losing 62-51.
The Rustlers were led by second year guard Kaitlyn Tonita with 16 points and five rebounds. Third year guard Angela Baran added eight points and two rebounds for the Rustlers, who also got eight points and three rebounds from fourth year forward Brianne Hergott.
Next weekend, the Rustlers (2-4) hit the road, traveling to Fort McMurray to take on the Keyano Huskies (3-3).
