Rustlers Men's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - January 17 & 18, 2020
The Rustlers men's volleyball team suffered 2 losses to the Keyano College Huskies this past weekend, leaving them with a record of 9-7.
On Friday night in Lloydminster, the Rustlers fell to the Huskies 1-3 (18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 20-25).
To start the match, the Huskies were too powerful for the Rustlers to hand and won the first set fairly handily 25-18. The Rustlers showed excellent ball control in the second set, and continually found holes in the Huskies' defense. The Rustlers would take the second set 25-23 over the Huskies.
The Huskies would bounce back and win the second set 25-17 over the Rustlers. They would carry this momentum into the fourth set and win the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was first-year outside hitter Mason Short with 6 kills, 2 blocks and 3 digs. Second-year outside hitter Ryan van Oosterwijck had 12 kills, and 8 digs in the match, and fourth-year outside hitter Matt Peck had 10 kills, 1 service ace, 1 block and 11 digs. Second-year setter Lane Blight had a team high 14 digs for the Rustlers, along with 36 assists.
On Saturday, the Rustlers would fall to the Huskies in 4 sets (23-25, 29-27, 18-25, 9-25). The Rustlers would have a strong offensive first set, where they would have more kills than the Huskies. However, they would lose a close one to the Huskies, 23-25.
The loss would not phase the Rustlers, and they would bring the same energy and intensity as the first set. This would pay off, as they would beat the Huskies in the second set in extra points, 29-27.
The Rustlers could not keep up their momentum heading into the third set. They would lose to the Huskies 17-25 in the third set, and 20-25 in the fourth set, and the match 1-3.
The Rustlers were led by third-year middle blocker Brady Cole with 8 kills, 3 blocks and 1 dig. Van Oosterwijck had 9 kills, and 6 digs in the match, and fourth-year middle blocker Tyler Williamson added 7 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 digs.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was fourth-year outside hitter Matt Peck with 5 kills, 1 service ace, 1 block and a team-high 10 digs.
The Rustlers are back in action on homecourt on Friday, January 24 to take on the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks.
