Rustlers Men's Volleyball | Weekend Recap - Oct 18 & 19, 2019
The Rustlers men's volleyball team opened their season with two wins over The King's University Eagles. The Rustlers defeated the Eagles 3-1 on Friday night and 3-0 on Saturday night.
Friday night was the Rustlers home and season opener in the Lloydminster campus gym. The opening set was filled with excitement, and lots of back-and-forth play. The Eagles came out on top beating the Rustlers 25-22.
The Rustlers would retaliate in the second set, controlling the ball well and defeating the Eagles handily, 25-16.
In the third, the Rustlers would win 25-18 and close out the match in the fourth set 25-14. Offensively, the Rustlers were led by fourth year outside hitter Matt Peck with 12 kills. Fourth year middle blocker Tyler Williamson added 8 kills and second year outside hitter Ryan van Oosterwijk another 7 kills.
Middle blocker Brady Cole had 5 stuff blocks in the match and second year setter Lane Blight had 4.
Player of the game for the Rustlers was second year middle blocker Brady Cole.
Saturday's game was even more dominant for the Rustlers beating the Eagles in 3 sets (25-23, 25-20-20 , 25-18).
The Rustlers were led by Peck with 9 kills, 2 blocks, 1 service ace, and 7 digs. Rustler's libero Jean Carlo Funez had 14 digs in the match, and Blight had 12 digs. The defensive performance from Funez earned him player of the game honours.
Head coach Taylor Dyer was pleased with the men's performance to start the season and attests their success to hard work and a veteran lineup.
The Rustlers are heading into a bye weekend and will return to the court November 1st and 2nd against the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Ooks. The Rustlers will be in Edmonton Friday night to face the Ooks in their home gym, and will return to Lloydminster on Saturday for a rematch at 8 pm.
