Men's Volleyball Weekend Recap | February 4, 2018
The Lakeland Rustlers Men's Volleyball team lost both matches on the weekend as they faced the NAIT Ooks. Friday night in Lloydminster, the Ooks defeated the Rustlers in 4 sets (17-25, 20-25, 25-21, 20-25). The Rustlers lost again in 4 sets (18-25, 23-25, 27-25, 23-25) Saturday night in Edmonton.
The NAIT Ooks defeated the Lakeland Rustlers in 4 sets (25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20) Friday night. The Rustlers got down early to start the match but were able to cut the Ooks lead to 16-12. The Rustlers tried to fight back, the deficit was too much, as they lost 25-17. The two teams went back and forth to start the second set, tying the score at four early. The Ooks then would go on an 8-2 run, opening up a 12-6 lead. The Rustlers tried to fight back in the set but lost 25-20. The Rustlers showed strong, determined play to start the third set, leading by as many as five early on.
The Ooks would fight back and tie the game at 17, but the Rustlers were determined to win a set as they won 25-21. The teams would go back and forth to start the fourth set before the Rustlers opened up a lead. The Ooks would fight back and ultimately take the set 25-20.
The Rustlers were led by 1st-year hitter Spencer Roizere with eight kills, five digs, and a service ace, while 2nd-year middle Tyler Williamson added six kills, two digs and a service ace. 2nd-year setter Jose Areliano distributed the ball for the Rustlers, finishing the match with 25 assists.
The Ooks defeated the Rustlers in 4 sets (18-25, 23-25, 27-25, 23-25) Saturday night. The Ooks controlled the first set, and although the Rustlers fought hard in the next three, they could only pull out the win in the third set. Roziere once again led the Rustlers with 11 kills, five digs, and a service ace.
2nd-Year libero/hitter Matt Peck had ten kills, nine digs, a block and a service ace, while 2nd-year outside Brayden Griffith had ten kills, seven digs, and a service ace. Areliano once again distributed the ball for the Rustlers, finishing the match with 38 assists.
The Rustlers return to the court next weekend as the face the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings. The Rustlers will host the Vikings Friday night at 8:00 pm before traveling to Camrose Saturday night to face the same Vikings team.
