Rustlers Men's Basketball | Weekend Recap - January 31 & February 1, 2020
The Rustlers men's basketball team split their weekend series with the Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) Wolves.
On Friday night, the Rustlers defeated the Wolves 101-68. The Rustlers had a strong first half, and they were up 56-33 by the end of it.
Their control continued into the third quarter where they outscored the Wolves 28-19 to go up 84-52. In the fourth quarter the Wolves kept the Rustlers close, but the Rustlers had already run away with the game.
The Rustlers were led by third-year forward, Kwantez Simmons with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and 4 steals. He led the team in nearly every category and was chosen as player of the game.
Third-year guard, Rashon Russel had 16 points, 2 steals and 1 block in the game, and Terrell Murduagh had 12 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, and 1 steal. First-year forward, Jamon Campbell also made an impact, scoring 12 points for the Rustlers and had 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals and 1 block.
Saturday's game would be an overtime thriller, where the Rustlers would fall short of the Wolves 84-89.
The Wolves and Rustlers were evenly matched in the first quarter, and at the end of it the Rustlers were down 20-23. In the second quarter, the Rustlers would pull ahead, and at the half they were up 41-32 over the Wolves.
The Rustlers continued to outscore the Wolves in the third quarter and heading into the fourth quarter the Rustlers were up 19 points, 67-48.
In the fourth quarter, the Rustlers appeared to have some breakdowns both defensively and offensively as the Wolves would outscore them 28-9 to tie up the game in the remaining seconds, forcing overtime.
In overtime, the Wolves continued to exploit the Rustlers and would win the game by 5 points, 89-84 over the Rustlers.
The Rustlers were led by fourth-year guard, Brandon Isaac with 29 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 steals. He was named player of the game for the Rustlers. Third-year guard, Rashon Russel had 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist in the game, and fourth-year guard, Adrian Richards had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals.
The Rustlers men's basketball team is currently sitting at 9 wins and 9 losses and 5th place in the ACAC North Division. They will be heading into some must-win weekends as they battle for a spot at the ACAC Conference Championships in early March.
The basketball teams are heading into a bye weekend, and will return to homecourt on Friday, February 14 at 8 pm, following the women's game, against the Augustana Vikings.
