The Lakeland Rustlers dropped their bronze semi-final matchup with the Dynamiques de Brebeuf Friday afternoon, 97-63.
The Rustlers kept the game close in the first quarter, despite being smaller than the Brebeuf team and being forced into tough shots. After the first quarter, the Rustlers trailed 17-14. The Rustlers cut the lead to one early in the second quarter, but foul trouble and poor defence hurt the Rustlers. The Rustlers were outscored 29-15 in the quarter, as the Rustlers trailed 46-29 at the half. The Rustlers continued to struggle on the defensive end in the third quarter, with Brebeuf scores limiting the Rustlers transition.
The Rustlers tried to cut into the lead from the 3-point line, but shots were not falling for the Rustlers, who trailed 67-50 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Rustlers ran out of gas. The Rustlers found ways to score inside, but struggled to hit shots from outside the key and could not get out and push the ball in transition. The Rustlers also struggled on the defensive end, giving up 97 points in the loss.
The Rustlers were led by fourth year forward Paul Smith-Profit, who had 15 points and two rebounds, earning himself Player of the Game. Third year forward Artavis Holiday had 14 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block, while fourth year forward Prentice Gardner added ten points, four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
The Rustlers will now play the loser of the second bronze semi-final between the Humber Hawks and the SAIT Trojans in the 7th place game at 2:00 PM EDT.
