Fall Regional Recap | November 23-25, 2018
The Lakeland Rustlers Curling Teams were in Red Deer over the weekend, participating in the ACAC Curling Fall Regional, hosted by Red Deer College. The Rustlers had three teams competing, one in each of the men's, women's and mixed divisions.
The men's team started off the Fall Regional with a tough loss to the NAIT Ooks in the 5:30 PM draw on Friday, losing 5-4. The Rustlers responded though, getting a win in their second game of the night, defeating the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings 7-5 in the 8:00 PM draw. On Saturday, the Rustlers played three games, facing the Concordia Thunder, Grant MacEwan Griffins, and Red Deer Kings. The Rustlers lost to the Thunder 10-3 and the Griffins 9-4, but finished the day with a win, defeating the Kings 3-2.
The Rustlers looked to finish the weekend on a high note, as they faced the Olds College Broncos in their only game of the day. The Rustlers had several good ends but lost to the Broncos 9-7. The men's team finished the Fall Regional with a 2-4 record, placing 5th out of 7 teams.
The women's team played two games on Friday, facing the Grant MacEwan Griffins and Concordia Thunder. The Rustlers started off the Fall Regional with a 6-3 loss to the Griffins but responded and defeated the Thunder 6-2, to finish the first day 1-1. The Rustlers had a quick turnaround, taking on the Olds College Broncos first thing Saturday morning. This would be the first of three, tough games for the Rustlers on Saturday, as the Rustlers lost 8-3. The Rustlers struggles continued Saturday afternoon, as they lost 4-1 to the NAIT Ooks and 8-1 to the Red Deer Queens. Sunday, the Rustlers took on the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings. Both teams were looking for their second win of the weekend and finish the Fall Regional on a win. Unfortunately, the Rustlers were not able to get the win, losing to the Vikings 5-3.
The women's team finished the Fall Regional with a 1-5 record, finishing 7th out of 7 teams.
The Rustlers mixed team got off to a good start on Friday, defeating the Portage Voyagers 7-1 and the University of Alberta – Augustana Vikings 10-3. The Rustlers continued their winning ways Saturday morning, as they defeated Red Deer 9-2 and followed that up with an 8-3 win over the Olds College Broncos Saturday evening. The Rustlers were handed their first and only loss of the Regional Sunday morning, as they lost to the NAIT Ooks 8-1.
The mixed team finished the Fall Regional with a 4-1 recording, finishing tied for 1st out of 6 teams.
The Rustlers next ACAC action will be January 25-27 in the Winter Regional, hosted by the Grant MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton.
