Lakeland represents well at Nationals
Curling is a game of inches and each shot is important. That proved very true for the Rustlers curlers at the recent 2017 CCAA nationals.
Lakeland's men's and women's teams travelled to Camrose to compete in the National championships hosted by U of A Augustana from March 22 - 25.
"Both teams were great ambassadors of Lakeland and competed at their highest level of the year," says Alan Rogan, Lakeland's athletics director.
The men's curling team finished off the round robin Friday night and was one shot away from moving on to the medal round on Saturday.
However, they lost in an extra end to NAIT in game 7 to drop into a 5-way tie for third and fourth place. After the tie breake rmath was calculated the men's team fell just outside of the playoffs.
Even though the team did not make the medal round they did play some of their best games of the season. Their record was 3-4 with wins over Humber, Mohawk and Olds. They lost to ACAC rivals NAIT, Red Deer, Augustana, and the eventual gold medalists from Fanshawe.
The women's team also finished just out of the playoff round as finishing in fifth place after the round robin." The Rustlers women's team battled hard over the week however they were unable to get into a consistent rhythm," says Rogan.
Their final game it was a winner-move-on game against Red Deer College. The Queens defeated the Rustlers and took the fourth place moving on Saturday's playoffs where they upset the number one Fanshawe Falcons. The Queens then won the national gold in a close game against the ACAC gold medalists from Concordia.
