Rowdy Rustler Roundup - Scott Manners, Curling
Sport: Curling
What year(s) did you compete for Lakeland - 1991 - 1993
How did playing for the Rustlers help you get to where you are today
Curling at Lakeland helped me communicate with a wide variety of people. I learned a lot about teamwork and commitment.
Where are you working right now and what are you doing?
I have been a grain farmer outside of Lloydminster since graduating in 1993.
Are you still involved with basketball now? Coaching/ playing etc.
I am still a high-performance athlete in Saskatchewan, competing in men’s curling and mixed doubles. I formed a new men’s team in Saskatchewan that will stay together to 2022. I also teach young kids how to curl in Lloydminster.
What was your favorite moment at Lakeland as a student-athlete?
When our 1991 – 1992 men’s team won the ACAC Championship banner. That was an exciting year. The final was a come from behind win for Lakeland!!
Are you still close with any former teammates?
There are not too many curlers my age still competing to make it to the Brier. I used to curl out of Alberta but switched provinces a few years ago. The new team I formed now includes recent Lakeland curler and new alumni, Carter Babij. One of our goals is to represent Saskatchewan again in the Brier.
If you could give a couple of words of advice to our current Rustlers what would it be?
I would recommend toenjoy the entire curling experience. Get to know your teammates and your opponents. You never know who you could be playing in the future.
Any additional words of wisdom?
Learning the game of curling takes a ton of patience. Stop looking at the scoreboard. There is more to curling than just wins and losses. Replay strategy with your team and coaches who are understanding. Curling has offered me so many great life lessons over the past 30 years. Take it all in while you can!
