Sport: Rowing
What year(s) did you compete for Lakeland: 2013-2014
How did playing for the Rustlers help you get to where you are today?
Playing for the Lakeland Rustlers reinforced my love for early mornings as our rowing team practiced at 6:00 am. It excelled my motivation and dedication for something that excites me. It also allowed me to seize opportunities of new things around me as I had never rowed before attending Lakeland.
Where are you working right now and what are you doing?
Currently I am back where I was born and raised – on the farm. We are a forage/grain operation under irrigation just outside of Lomond, AB.
Are you still involved with rowing now? Coaching/ playing etc.
Unfortunately, there are no opportunities for the sport in my area. So instead, I take up whatever opportunity for sports like rec volleyball that I can.
What was your favorite moment at Lakeland as a student-athlete?
Hands down, the novice women’s 8 race in Burnaby for the Western University Championship. It literally came down to a photo finish. We couldn’t tell from inside the boat and even when we got back to the dock, our coach Peter was awfully quiet and wasn’t sure of the result. What a joy to win such a tight race!
Are you still close with any former teammates?
Unfortunately, I don’t live close enough to any of my teammates, but I do catch up with a few of them every now and then.
If you could give a couple of words of advice to our current Rustlers what would it be?
Never underestimate your abilities and what skills you can develop when you put in the time and effort! Our team was a crew of people new to rowing yet we won the Western Championship against rowers who grew up on the water.
