Rowdy Rustler Roundup - Dawn Rosset
Sport: Rowing
What year(s) did you compete for Lakeland: 2011-2013
How did playing for the Rustlers help you get to where you are today?
Being a Rustler athlete reinforced my love of sport and competition! I never dreamt I would compete at such a high level, against people half my age and succeed! Forming a strong bond through practice and competition highlighted to me that a common goal and being a dedicated team player will lead you to success!
Where are you working right now and what are you doing?
I work as an Educational Assistant in Pierceland SK. Moving shortly to Eastern Saskatchewan to a small farm.
Are you still involved with rowing now? Coaching/ playing etc.
Unfortunately, I am no longer involved in rowing only because of the lack of facilities in my area. I'm still involved in sport as a Senior boys’ volleyball coach.
What was your favorite moment at Lakeland as a student-athlete?
The highlight of my rowing experience was winning the first Western Canadian Rowing Championship Gold medal for Lakeland College in Burnaby BC in 2012. The men's crew followed us the next race and won gold! We had such an extremely strong team that year.
Are you still close with any former teammates?
I still talk with some of my teammates even though we are literally spread out around western Canada.
If you could give a couple of words of advice to our current Rustlers what would it be?
It wasn't always easy getting up 5:30 am to practice in the dark, on a cold morning and hop on the water. But once I was on the water with the crew, I didn't want to be anywhere else. It’s a short season! Take it all in! By far the best sunrise you’ll see!
Any additional words of wisdom?
It's never too late to go back to school! I enrolled in Lakeland College Environmental Science program, CARE in 2010 at the age of 39 and a mother of two boys. Getting good grades was my priority when I moved to Vermilion. If you want it bad enough, you can do it!
I strongly feel I became a better student and member of the college community once I joined the rowing team. Put yourself out there and experience the whole college life.
