Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - October 22, 2024
Lakeland Athletics saw the Rustlers final weekend of action on the pitch, while the on-ice product continued to surge.
Rustlers Hockey
The women's hockey team hosted the Olds Broncos for a pair of games, including Cowboy Hats and Cow bells on Friday night. Olds managed to keep the game close for the first 30 minutes, before the Rustlers exploded late in the second period to win 4-0. Four different players scored for Lakeland, with three players having multi-point games. Shaye Thompson made 21 saves in the shutout.
Saturday afternoon, the Broncos were able to score twice and force the Rustlers work hard for the 3-2 victory. Ella Wingert scored the game winner late in the third. This improves the squad to 4-0 on the year.
Rustlers Soccer
On the pitch Saturday afternoon, the Rustlers held Community Soccer Day, with the Portage Voyageurs in town. The Women had one of their biggest offensive efforts of the year, winning 8-0. Megan Hockley scored a hatrick and added two assists, while Kayla Mondue and Emily Thoms each had three-point outings, while defender Madeline Russett was the POG in her final home game.
Sunday, Lakeland traveled to Edmonton for another tilt against the undefeated Concordia Thunder. After playing the league best team to a draw for most of the game, a beautiful bending corner kick from the Thunder was the lone goal of the contest. This left the women sitting fourth in the North Division with a 5-7 record, having improved their goal differential from the previous year by 17.
The men weren't quite as dominant over the Voyageurs, but still won in a romp 5-1, with Josh Malin posting a hattrick and an assist. Sunday against the Thunder, the score was once again 5-1 Rustlers. Malin added two more goals and an assist, while Alex Hawrishok also scored twice. This result placed the men's team third in the North at 6-3-3, their best regular season finish in years and in the playoff picture if not for NWP hosting the men's and women's tournaments this fall.
