Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - Nov 13, 2023
A quieter weekend for Rustlers Athletics was successful on the court, with a small set back on the ice.
Women's and men's basketball hosted the Augustana Vikings Friday evening, as part of Military Appreciation Night. Augustana gave the women's team a tough opening five minutes, but the Rustlers began win every five minute segment of the game afterwards, the final being 96-64. Susan Ayaa had a monster stat line, scoring 28 points and adding 8 rebounds and 4 blocks, to keep the Rustlers undefeated.
The men's game wasn't as big a blowout, but Lakeland was again able to win every quarter in the 86-67 victory. Abdul Al-Tamimi had 25 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds, while Jordan Simpson added 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Rustlers fifth straight win.
Women's hockey were also in action in Lloydminster Friday night, hosting the NAIT Ooks. The Royal Canadian Legion was present for the pregame ceremony ahead of Remembrance Day. Hailey Carothers opened the scoring for Lakeland, but NAIT scored four goals in the first two periods, hanging on for the 4-3 win. Keyra Buziak had a goal and an assist in the contest.
Saturday the Rustlers traveled to Edmonton for the rematch. Once again, Lakeland opened the scoring, courtesy of MacKenzie Stafford, but the Ooks would go on to win 3-2. Mackenzie Dohan made 32 saves in the loss.
The two losses drop Lakeland to 7-3, third in the ACAC. Their next series is against the Medicine Hat Rattlers this weekend, 7:00 PM Friday evening and 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon, both at the Russ Robertson Arena.
Basketball and volleyball will face the Lethbridge Kodiaks and Ambrose Lions Friday and Saturday respectively, with basketball on the road.
For the home volleyball matches, Saturday night will be Cowboys and Cowbells, prizes going to those with the best western attire.
