Lakeland Rustlers Weekend Recap - Oct 30, 2023
Lakeland College continued to put a winning product out on the court and on the ice.
Rustlers Basketball
Things kicked off Friday evening, with basketball facing the King's Eagles on the road. The women's team was looking to get back at the visitors after losing in a play-in game last winter, while the men needed a win after dropping their opening weekend to Concordia.
On Friday, the women held off a physical Eagles squad early, before blowing the game up in the final quarter. Missy Nuku had a game high 26 points. Saturday night in Lloydminster was the reverse, as the Rustlers outscored the Eagles 25-16 and 17-11 in the first two quarters, riding it out to a 79-55 victory. Nuku had 15 points, while Kayleena Garda, Sarah Dacuycuy and Susan Ayaa were also in double digits.
The men had a tougher time with the King's, giving up 30 points in the third quarter on Friday, before responding with a 22-2 fourth quarter. Abdul Al-Tamimi and Jordan Simpson had 19 and 18 points respectively. It remained competitive on Saturday, where the Eagles made the Rustlers work right till the final minute in an 87-80 Lakeland victory. Favour Ugbah was the Rustlers leading scorer with 16.
Women's basketball remains undefeated and untested in ACAC action so far, while the men are back at .500.
Rustlers Volleyball
Volleyball hosted the King's Eagles on Friday, where a rowdy crowd full of high school teams cheered on the Rustlers. The women made a third straight sweep to start the year, winning 25-20, 25-21, 25-16. 1st year middle blocker Raegan Nicol won Player of the Game with 6 kills, 2 blocks, an ace and a steady presence at the net that forced errors from the Eagles, while Avery Bates had another big match, posting 13 kills, 10 digs and 4 blocks.
On the road in Edmonton, Lakeland got off to a slow start and showed some inconsistency for the first time in nearly a year losing in four to King's. Set scores were 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 23-25. 4th year Lana Matthews was a bright spot in the loss with her season high 20 kills. This is the first loss for the Rustlers since Nov. 26, 2022 and their first loss in less than five sets since the 2022 ACAC Championship.
Men's volleyball had two competitive matches against the Eagles and got the better of them in each four-set contest. Scores were 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-16, 26-24, 23-25, 25-18, keeping the squad undefeated to start the season.
